The Italian Ministry of Transport published a decree on February 26th, 2018, introducing a new Italian drivers license format. The new document is called “Licenza di guida e autorizzazione della patente”, and it replaces the current one, known as “licenza di guida”.

Meanwhile, the new Italian drivers license contains three parts: the front side, the back side, and the inside cover. The front side includes the photo of the driver, his/her signature, date of birth, gender, nationality, address, and ID card number.

On the reverse, one can find the following information listed: the name of the car owner, the license plate number, the type of vehicle, the manufacturer, the model and serial number, the color, the chassis number, the engine size, the fuel consumption and emissions data, the maximum speed limit.

The location where the vehicle was registered, the date of issue and expiration of the license, the holder’s signature, and the signature of the person who signed the document.

Last but not least, space has been set aside on the inner cover for the insurance policy, the vehicle inspection report, and the roadworthiness certificate.

How to Get an International Driving Permit for Italy

However, the Italian drivers license is a document that allows you to drive legally within the borders of Italy. You must apply for it before traveling abroad. If you are planning to travel outside of Italy, make sure you obtain a valid international driver’s permit.

Similarly, this document allows you to drive legally in countries where you do not hold a national license.

Above all. to qualify for an international driving permit, you must meet certain requirements. First, you must be 18 years old or older. Second, you must complete a course approved by the Ministry of Transport. Third, you must pass a test administered by the local authority responsible for issuing licenses.
